In the year 1880 a sea-sponge processing factory,  one of the largest in Greece,  was established here  by Greek and English sponge merchants.

The classical buildings of the old factory,  with modern extensions and facilities,  were converted into a hotel in 1959,  which was fully renovated in 2002.

The Hotel Brown is situated near the town centre  and only a five minute walk from the main port of Aegina island  directly overlooking a sandy bathing beach  with nearby tavernas, restaurants,  dancing and music bars for evening entertainment.
